Surrender to the Struggle

A Muslim-Jewish encounter,

trying to heal from a personal wound

perhaps as a way to heal from a collective trauma

You a Muslim careseeker,

I a Jewish caregiver.

You who are seeking care,

You who are alone,

You who are grateful for a space

Which holds you

A space as you said that “cares for you”

You welcome me as a caregiver,

Allowing me to ask,

Allowing me to share a breath,

Together with you.

Strip away the identity you were born with,

Unleash the past.

Be who you want to be,

present,

In order for me to witness you,

Born again this moment,

For me

For you.

When do you meet the other,

Without repeating your own patterns,

Your stories,

Your judgments,

Without sensing if the other’s face is safe or not.

In front of death,

We are all equal,

We are all human beings,

Ben Adam.

-son of earth in Hebrew-

May we both Surrender

-is one of the meanings of the word Islam-

Surrender to the Struggle

- is one of the meanings of the word Israel-

Between you and me,

- Jew and Muslim-

The struggle of Old,

Of the ancestral siblings.

Why do they,

Why do we,

Choose to struggle?

May we surrender to the struggle,

Between you and me,

Between me and myself,

Between me and the unknown.
